I don’t care if his personal life is weird, or what religion he follows, I find Tom Cruise entertaining. He basically plays the same role with some slight variations, like most actors and I respect that. But I have even more respect for character actors who become the role instead of making it just another version of what they already do.
Edge of Tomorrow takes a Groundhog Day motif and turns it into war with aliens and it does it very well. If you don’t like violence in your movies, blood, etc. …might want to select another flick.
This happens in England and France. There’s an absoluter WWII occupied feel to it, right down to the maps.
The premise is a shallow officer just before a big battle with the big bad alien hive-mind invaders, a far worse than D-Day scenario. He manages to piss off his new commanding officer and finds himself a private ready to hit the beaches. But when he dies the day starts again.
Despite being a repeat the day movie the story telling is pretty straight forward and compelling. As he relives each day shallow slips away and he becomes a hero. This is, perhaps, the greatest part of the movie script-wise, though the developing relationship with a war hero is great too.
I won’t say about the script: no need to spoil.
Special effects out the wazoo. I wouldn’t wait for the small screen and I wish I had seen it in 3D.
