The “War on Christmas” meme is inspiring the usual spate of headlines including “The University Of Tennessee Is Waging A Literal War On Christmas” (The Daily Caller); arguments on talk-television like the one on ABC’s “The View” over the selection of known atheists Penn and Teller to be the grand marshals at this year’s annual Hollywood Christmas Parade; and the opening of the “Defend Christmas Freedom Hotline” in South Carolina, by a group called the Palmetto Family Council, which is affiliated with Focus on the Family.

Last month, during the great Battle of Starbucks, Donald Trump, still the Republican Party’s frontrunner for its presidential nomination, made a startling intervention, telling an audience at a rally in Springfield, Illinois, that he wouldn’t be patronizing Starbucks because of its plain, red coffee cups that left out any mention of Christmas. “Did you read about Starbucks? No more Merry Christmas … I wouldn’t buy,” Trump said. “Maybe we should boycott Starbucks. I don’t know. Seriously. I don’t care.”
