DJ’s Plan to End Piracy

For the couple of days I have been hearing about hijacking of the Maersk Alabama by five armed Somali pirates who were bitch-slapped forced to run off with the ship’s captain in a life boat some 300 miles away from shore.

Currently the four who “got away” along with their hostage are afloat on the Indian Ocean surrounded by military vessels from several different nations. There is even a US destroyer there.

These four idiotsticks want to be granted “safe passage” for them and their hostage so they can get to a safe haven to allow them to negotiate a ransom for their troubles.

Additionally, other pirates in Somalia have decided come and back up their comrades by bringing their hostages and ships they’ve been holding for ransom.

Mohamed Samaw, a Somali resident of the pirate stronghold in central Eyl town, who claims to have a “share” in a British-owned ship hijacked Monday, said four foreign ships previously captured by pirates are heading toward the lifeboat. A total of 54 hostages are on two of the ships, citizens of China, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Tuvalu, Indonesia and Taiwan.

“The pirates have summoned assistance – skiffs and motherships are heading towards the area from the coast,” said a Nairobi-based diplomat, who spoke on condition on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media. “We knew they were gathering yesterday.”

Samaw said two ships left Eyl on Wednesday afternoon. A third sailed from Haradhere, another pirate base in central Somalia, and the fourth one was a Taiwanese fishing vessel seized Monday that was already only 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the lifeboat.

Gee, could you ask for a better solution to this problem?

The reason these pirates have gotten away with this for as long as they have is because nobody has gotten tough with them. Instead, they’ve simply negotiated with them and paid them off for the return of their property. No wonder these shit stains become bolder as time goes on.

Another man identified as a pirate by three different residents of Haradhere also said the captured German ship had been sent to the rescue.

“They had asked us for reinforcement and we have already sent a good number of well-equipped colleagues, who were holding a German cargo ship,” said the pirate who asked that only his first name, Badow, be used to protect him from reprisals.

“We are not intending to harm the captain, so that we hope our colleagues would not be harmed as long as they hold him,” Badow said.

“All we need, first, is a safe route to escape with the captain, and then (negotiate) ransom later,” he added.

This is how bold these people are. They have gotten away with this crap for so long that they feel “entitled” to a chance to negotiate a ransom. Additionally, they think they can actually put up a show of force by bringing hostages on captured ships to a rendezvous with several military ships out in the middle of nowhere.

Let them come. Tell them to send more of their friends, along with any other captured ships and personnel they have. Let’s get them out there in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Then just blast them out of the water.

Yeah, I know, there are hostages aboard, and these are ships loaded with cargo that belong to other people. But there are also these emboldened pirates on board.

I doubt that we would have to blast every ship there. I suspect that after picking a small ship, letting loose a few 16-inch rounds, the pirates might just see that they no longer have that feeling of invincibility any longer. Once they see that we are willing to cut our “losses” by denying them safe passage, their ill-gotten gains, their hopes for ransom, and even their very lives, the ones still sitting on shore might actually figure out that there are much better ways to make a living.

Negotiate? Sure, maybe just long enough to get our people in place, then just remove them from this mortal coil.

If we want the practice of modern-day piracy to end, we have to show that we can be ruthless — even if it means losing a few hostages in the process. I know that sounds cold-hearted, but pussy-footing around with it like we have been just doesn’t work. Besides, we’ve been down this road before, and the only thing that worked was Jefferson taking a hard line on pirates.
