Or, “Suspicion IS warranted.” Not saying this will absolutely happen, just seems beyond likely to me. I am saying checking into it makes sense then doing what you think you might have to do.

Real ID was a 2005 law, but there has been a lot of talk about it in some states, especially red ones. Could be innocent. I suspect NOT.
Inspection I must admit there is a slight edge of paranoia and suspicion to my personality. I have always been able to either dismiss most of the vile fungus that sprouts from that trait. Mostly I just keep it down to a lingering, conscience tingling, state of, “Well MAYBE…” Because, unfortunately, it has served me all too well so many times. When I just ignore it is usually when worse happens.
I find this one an all brainer. I resisted using “no brainer” because Democrats not using their brains; or at not least acting on the obvious, is why we keep getting caught up in election fraud tactics.
Good rule: if they can get away with eliminating voters who tend not to vote their way the right will seek out and implement multiple ways to do it in any state they dominate all across the country. Most of it based on the hordes of illegal voters voting conspiracy theory they have no proof of. This year we need to make sure we brainstorm what new tactics they will use. This is my first offering.
In Tennessee the need to get Real ID has been covered by the news quite a few times. I spend a lot of time in New York State too, about as much as Tennessee and I have heard in NYS, as us old fogies say, “Diddlysquat.” (What is a “Diddly,” and like all biological beings from time to time doesn’t it have to… never mind.)
So to get a “real” ID; after bringing multiple examples of of who you say you are, they run you through ICE, National Security, etc… If you jump these hurdles you get a fancy ID that’s supposed to be kind of like the new bills that would be hard to fake. Supposedly. Note: during Bush when they redid our bills they found counterfeit bills in a warehouse the next day that were only slightly off. So much for any perfect system.
But, hey, you finally get that gold star your kindie-garten teacher gave to others. Good boy. Good girl. Fetch. Roll over.
I think you know by now where I am heading: what some might label paranoia, until it’s not.
Gee, which state tends to vote which way?
Gee, in which state, which precincts, do you think it will be enforced more?
Gee, in which states will voters be reminded a lot, which not… or only reminded at the last minute when it’s too late?
What if Congress passes a law, or Trump signs an executive order, where everyone has to have one before they vote, and that’s done close to the election so few will have it? Framed as election security, which of course they have had no to little interest in except to push their unsubstantiated huge voter fraud conspiracy theory.
All of us deeply concerned with election fraud who think this highly unlikely please raise your hands!!!
Yeah, you know better than that. If it can be done it’s highly likely they will do it. If it can’t they will try, try, try, again, and again.
If they do this, post reelection, you know right wingers who; among so many delusions think themselves comedians, will find less than intelligent ways to call those who didn’t get to vote stupid. Led by the weakest insults ever in-Chief. Claim getting one was “so simple,” and “everyone knew.” Framed as those who weren’t allowed actually didn’t come out because they really didn’t care enough… you know like 2016 only more so? No matter how obvious BS all that is.
Be wary of those who will downplay concerns, “Oh, that ID is only for…” It’s a possible weapon to be used against politically incorrect voters. That makes it a enticing vulnerability for those interested in gaming the system via election fraud tactics.
 Only paranoia? MAYBE.
But to be sure I’m going to get one.
 I hope you do too.

Inspection is a column that has been written by Ken Carman for over 40 years.
