Glass Houses and Stone Throwing
Okay, we’ve all been though the past week’s revelation that Obama’s former Pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has some harsh things to say concerning race and relations in this country. Endless playing of a three-minute loop of the ugliest this man had to say in a thirty year career is thought to have hurt Obama politically.
Peggy Noonan summed Obama’s landmark speech up pretty well, by calling it “A Thinking Man’s Speech”
You know what Mr. Obama said. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright was wrong. His sermons were “incendiary,” and they “denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation.” Mr. Obama admitted that if all he knew of Mr. Wright were what he saw on the “endless loop … of YouTube,” he wouldn’t like him either. But he’s known him 20 years as a man who taught him Christian faith, helped the poor, served as a Marine, and leads a community helping the homeless, needy and sick. “As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me.” He would not renounce their friendship.
While Obama has gone out of his way to explain that he doesn’t believe or stand forsome of the things that his pastor says or does, he is still being painted with the broad brush of association based on an out-of-context video played on YouTube. BC of Misha’s site said Obama “threw his own grandmother under the bus.” In that same post, we get to see inside the mind ofthe truly clueless:
Bottom line is this. Indigenious Africans in the period of 1800-1850 were cursed with a life expectancy of 23 years. Africans abducted from africa as slaves to america had a life expectancy of 51. The slavers, arguably, did them a favor by abducting them to the new world.
I don’t even know where to begin on something as stupid as that statement. The white man did them a favor by bringing them over here to work as slaves for over twice their life span. Never mind that one out of three slaves transported over here died before they even reached these shores. Never mind that they never asked to be “saved” in this way.
He tries to clean it up later on by saying today’s blacks are fortunate to be over here because if they hadn’t been captured as slaves back then they could only expect to live to age 47.
Then he excuses the whole slave trade itself by saying it wasn’t the white man rounding up the blacks for the slave trade, it was the OTHER black tribesmen.
Uh… without the white man WANTING the slaves, the OTHER black tribesmen wouldn’t have been rounding them up for him. Besides, the ONLY reason they were rounding them up was that if they didn’t the white man would take THEM.
But I digress.
Trinity Church videotapes all of its sermons. How is it that none of the “news” outlets have bothered to check out any of the other videotapes looking for more of these “racist” statements? Could it be that this particular loop constantly played is the sum bulk of these types of comments? Could it be that Jeremiah Wright isn’t the eeeevil ‘racist’ that he is being portrayed as?
Oh, but look, it looks as though Jeremiah Wright met with the former President Clinton as well.
Do we paint Bill Clinton as racist too?
But you notice how quiet both Bill and Hillary have been on all of this. I doubt it really has anything to do with this particular picture, although it isa bit embarrassing, if you think about it.
No, Hillary has something else to worry about, and it has to do with her own affiliations in a religious group.
Barbara Ehrenreich of The Nation Magazine just posted an article called, Hillary’s Nasty Pastoratewhere she tells the story about how Hillary is more vulnerable to unsavory religious affiliations than Barack.
You can find all about it in a widely under-read article in the September 2007 issue of Mother Jones, in which Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet reported that “through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as “The “Fellowship,” also known as The Family. But it won’t be a secret much longer. Jeff Sharlet’s shocking expos瞼em>The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power will be published in May.
A secretive Capitol Hill religious group?
From the Mother Jones article:
For 15 years, Hillary Clinton has been part of a secretive religious group that seeks to bring Jesus back to Capitol Hill. Is she triangulatingor living her faith?
I think alot of both. She has proven time and again to be a manipulator, but you also have to realize that she didn’t start out her adult life as a progressive/liberal/democrat, she was a Conservative Republican. Heck, she was also a “Goldwater Girl”. So this goes back further than the fifteen years she’s been in Washington. This is something that is at her core.
Through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as the Fellowship. Her collaborations with right-wingers such as Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) grow in part from that connection. “A lot of evangelicals would see that as just cynical exploitation,” says the Reverend Rob Schenck, a former leader of the militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue who now ministers to decision makers in Washington. “I don’t….there is a real good that is infected in people when they are around Jesus talk, and open Bibles, and prayer.”
Yes, strange bed fellows indeed.
Is there still any doubt about what Hillary Clinton is all about? Some of us have been seeing her conservative roots for a long time, disguised as a “progressive”. But the woman is far from being progressive in most of her agenda. She voted for the war authorization, and later tries to minimize it by saying that she didn’t expect Bush to actually use that authorization. She has consistently voted for most of the Conservative legislation and confirmations since she took office.
Follow the money of her contributors too. She gets the bulk of her money from the insurance and military contractor lobbies. Why do you suppose that is?
She lied during the primaries in Ohio when confronted about her support of NAFTA. After the release of 11,000 pages of documents the other day, her lie was exposed. She was one of the biggest cheerleaders of NAFTA, GATT, and the WTO. (she was on the board at Wal*Mart, remember?)
A vote for Hillary is a vote for a smart version of George Bush. I am not sure which is scarier. A smart corporatist.
