If Obamacare passes, that free insurance card thats in peoples pockets is gonna be as worthless as a Confederate dollar after the War Between the Statesthe Great War of Yankee Aggression…
— Rep. Paul Broun (R-Lunatic) as quoted by the Daily Beast. (H/T to Bartcop.com.)

Many years ago a friend of mine accidentally fell out of a second-story window and landed head-first on a concrete parking lot. To put it in medical terms, his brain was completely scrambled, and it took him some time before he could recognize friends and relatives. (Fortunately, he didn’t sustain any long-term serious brain damage.)

He was a Civil War buff, and one of the questions the doctors used to monitor how well he was coming back from his massive concussion was to ask what the American war between the North and the South was commonly called. My friend answered brightly, “The War of Northern Aggression.” The doctors decided he should stay in the hospital for another couple of weeks as he was plainly mentally unfit to be released.

Yeah, living in the South I’ve had to hear that from time to time, though Thanksgiving time I was informed by my northern wife’s brother in law that up until the Proclamation it had “nothing to do with slavery.” When I asked him if they didn’t even discuss and argue slavery previous to that, he said “sure they did.” Then I commented “then if they did you can’t say it had nothing to do with slavery, can you?” he said it, no, it had nothing to do with it and then essentially called me an idiot.

Never guess where I’m not going for a long time.

He’s a Beck-ite, Hannity-ite, Limbaugh fan. Surprised?

“Northern War of Aggression?”

For the sake of honesty maybe they should change their slogans to “The Nigger’s going to take away our health care,” a direct descendant of “They’re taking our niggers away.” Hell, some are already using the pejorative. Might as well be honest.

Yes, State’s rights did have more to do with it. But to paraphrase the VP of the old Confederacy…

“If it hadn’t been for slavery there would have been no war.”
