Joe the Victim

Okay, now this is getting to be ridiculous. The man who was thrust into the public meat grinder last Wednesday evening, “Joe the Plumber”, has had his entire life story ripped open and spread all over the world. Now there are people complaining and blaming the Obama campaign for turning this man’s world upside down.

Yesterday, Misha was “…So Fucking Mad” he was “Spitting Nails” because this guy’s life was being put out on Main Street for everyone to see. Was he mad because McCain used him for a prop without vetting him first, like he did when he picked Sarah Palin as a running mate?

No.

He is blaming the media.

Today, John McCain lept to Joe’s defense by blaming Barack Obama for maligning the plumber whose vote Mr. Obama has sought at a campaign stop in Ohio.

“The response from Senator Obama and his campaign yesterday was to attack Joe,” Mr. McCain said. “People are digging through his personal life, and he has TV crews camped out in front of his house. He didn’t ask for Senator Obama to come to his house. He wasn’t recruited or prompted by our campaign. He just asked a question. And Americans ought to be able to ask Senator Obama tough questions without being smeared and targeted with political attacks.”

Senator McCain, if you are looking for someone to blame, look in the mirror. What did you expect would happen if you dropped this person’s name twenty-six times during a nationally televised debate? I mean, you gave this guy a central role to play in your presentation. This guy represented everything that you considered wrong with Obama’s proposals. Suddenly you had “proof” in the persona of a real-live plumber seeking the American dream.

So yes, the media is going to scramble to find out who this guy is. Not only should Americans be able to ask Obama tough questions, Americans should be able to question your ‘evidence’ when you make a claim.

Misha, et al, dispute the fact that Joe isn’t licenced to work as a plumber. He isn’t licensed because he has yet to meet the requirements to sit for the test. He IS allowed to work under the direct supervision of his boss. But Misha misses the point. Nobody cares whether Joe is licensed or not — it is interesting, but not important.

What IS important is the fact that this man came forward and represented himself to Obama that turned out to be nothing more than a lie. Joe makes $42,000 a year, which is about $5,000 less than the median wage of a plumber in the Toledo area. The business Joe was supposed to be buying last year cleared $75,000 in taxable income. Not the $280,000 he told Obama.

Yet this was the example John McCain wanted to hold up to the public and claim Obama would dash this man’s dream by making it impossible for him to own this company.

It is John McCain who is to blame for all of this. Once again, he jumped off half-cocked without thinking things through or even bothering to vet this guy’s claims.

This is the man we want in the White House?

Both Joe AND his boss would realize tax cuts under Obama’s tax plan. Even if Joe were able to buy this company, he would save money that he wouldn’t save under McCain. Those are the facts.

Misha is also complaining that the media has spent too long on Joe because he feels we’ve learned more about Joe than we have about Obama, ACORN, Ayers, Wright, etc.

No, we have learned a LOT about all of it. The problem is, Republicans don’t like what they are hearing.

But I am getting tired of hearing McCain blame Obama for something McCain is to blame for, and I am tired of the Right refusing to believe the facts in a story, when most people have come to the conclusion that there is no story there.
