The News Pauper: Now That’s Leadership!

By W.B. Dunne

The News Pauper returns from his travels in the real world.

The “news” is full of the items that perpetuate the status quo of hyperbole over content.

It is the humble NP’s desire to avoid dissipating my meager energies responding to the daily outrage in deference to observing the larger trends that indicate the way the future will be. The following is a commentary that no doubt will go against the grain of the latest strident outcry over Obama’s moves in office.

I support Obama because he is in fact playing a long game that has already begun to bear fruit. Namely, look how we as a public are digesting real information again … even the Foxers can’t escape discussing the reality of the disparity in the wealth people hold in this country while the tax cut debate proceeds.

Fox News and the media at large are cornered into presenting facts, although skewed, in the story about WikiLeaks. The list goes on as you, dear reader, already know. It isn’t my intention to repeat the litany of which you are completely aware.

The cries on the left of betrayal by Obama are good for the discourse in the regard that the right is compelled to gloat publicly, drawing a huge amount of attention to the policies in question. Obama is wise, and far from weak…how else would he be able to commit to such a course?

He knows what is necessary to turn the ship of state.

The energy he is creating on the left by pretending to cater to the right will be a force that shows the tea party for what it is; a shell. The right is forced into an impossible position of supporting the devil himself to get their agenda enacted, and I can point out several examples of this dynamic already happening in the tax cut story.

The News Pauper: So You Say You Won…Fair and Square

By W.B. Dunne

This one goes out to the youngsters out there who have only begun to experience the political process in America. The ones who voted Obama into office and are now seeing the correction for the first time in these midterms:

The Democrats won in a landslide in 2010 for the first time ever in a midterm election, and the fact that there is a “Speaker Boehner” on November third is due to a Supreme Court decision, the Koch Brothers, Fox News, the US Chamber of Commerce, and Karl Rove.

The NP reminds the young voter that the great court supported the corrupted GOP with its Citizens United decision, allowing for unlimited and undisclosed money from corporations and foreign interests in the campaign. The unintended consequence was that it helped the Tea Party candidates too, and that fact threatens to split the right wing in the House of Representatives. A silver lining for Progressives if ever there was one!

Hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign interference has bought the corporate masters precious little. Speaker Boehner will get what he always wanted and was promised long ago, the mantle of Head of the GOP Majority, but it will not be what he thought it would be. He is presiding over a shattered party in disarray, and it couldn’t happen to a more corrupt deserving devil!

The right outspent the left eight to one to garner a measly majority in the House, and despite all the crowing, all that has been accomplished is the creation of a need to follow through with these untenable policies the right pretends to espouse. They say that America has given the Republicans another chance; the reality is that their corporate daddy BOUGHT them another chance.

The News Pauper: On Freedom of Speech in the Year 2010

By W.B. Dunne

As the News Pauper peruses the demise of sensible discourse since the end of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, he is forced to ask himself if the Founding Fathers expected anything like Fox News or Rush Limbaugh to exist. It seems to be common belief that the actions of these right-wing ‘Nattering Nabobs’ and those like them will somehow put the Constitution to a test…those archaic intellects can’t be safe in a world with Mass Media Mensas like Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes to contend with!

It seems to smack of panic-stricken recognition of the threat of irrelevance or defeat that drives the daily shrillness on Fox. Glenn Beck bounces the rhetorical superball down the crazy collider and Rush superconducts the energy generated into the mainstream conversation.

In the beginning, Rush carried the crazy relatively alone, but now, a generation later, the crazy is refracted and amplified. Like shards in the gutter from some smash and grab, there are so many knock-offs of Rush we may never be completely free of them.

The NP begs the reader to consider the environment in which our founding documents were spawned, and consider the possibility that the intent of the First Amendment was the following:

Hyperbole must exhaust itself eventually, so there is much to be gained by allowing that energy to dissipate itself than to waste energy fighting or censoring it. The Founders knew this and made it a priority for their timeless document.

Many see the Citizens United decision in the US Supreme Court as a challenge to the First Amendment’s ability to protect the rights of common citizens in this country, in favor of large corporations spending huge sums to affect the results of elections. The NP sees the wisdom of the Founders peeping through…having the benefit of being true visionaries rather than false Fox Prophets…they realized that it is human nature to react in the moment and to only play these things out to their extremes in retrospect, after the effect of the momentary reaction has taken place and the benefit of the insight is useless.

How lucky we are as a society to be the beneficiaries of such a system, which intentionally stems the knee from jerking when it is struck by something.

The way that this is set up, every dime that is spent attempting to undermine democracy is doomed to be lost by the ones doing the undermining…and absorbed into the democracy itself.

The NP has done his share of complaining about the state of the nation due to the rhetoric in the discourse, but has recently been shown the light by the Founders themselves. I’m convinced that the corner has been turned and the light of democracy will soon shine its warmth again. The desperate crowing of the right is the ‘tell’ for me, it is a degree of hyperbole that demonstrates the final throes, if you will, of an ill-planned and poorly executed attack on democracy by a cabal of evil and their laughable junior minions.

All the money in the world won’t remove the stain of guilt from Dick Cheney and Karl Rove, who brought us George Bush, the first selected President in American History.

Karl Rove is attempting a big comeback with his American Crossroads unit. Funded primarily by those with the most to lose in the restoration of the interests of the general welfare, it will be a pleasure to see them fade into history, under the circular file name “Frauds”.

Once these elements of our society are rendered obsolete, we can begin the task of bringing the greed to heel. I predict that, one day, conspicuous consumption, which is veiled with words like “exclusive” or “upscale,” will give way to conspicuous generosity.

Perhaps it will be the goal of the corporate person itself!

A child will one day say to herself,

“I wish to grow up to be a philanthropic trillionare CEO of Corporation X, so I could be credited with the relief of the suffering of generations of humans by conquering poverty and disease through the eradication of ignorance.”

It is quite enough for the NP to have a few read this and smile.

For now.

The News Pauper: The American Dream is in the Way of the Master Raceit Must Be Destroyed.

By W.B. Dunne

How is that going to be done?

Ask the next generation, right now, if they have any faith at all in their 401kstheyll say, What 401k? Put out story after story about the weakness of the Social Security system and the failures of government in general. Starve the system, with inordinately large tax cuts for the rich and create a culture where the representatives feel free to take bribes from lobbyists to submit bills that industry wrote themselves. In other words, foment chaos and undermine the rule of law.

I would like to thank the GOP for releasing their August outrage accelerant in this:

YouTube Preview Image

It really is quite the exquisite propaganda piece. It has jarred the News Pauper from his repose in the dismay from the BP debacleand heres why:

If on September 11, 2001, you realized that you were witnessing a commercial shoot for the 2010 midterms, what would your reaction have been? Language does not exist to describe the below-lowliness of the GOP for creating a false controversy in the form of the Ground Zero mosque, which is not at Ground Zero and is farther away than a mosque that was there from before 9-11and conflating it with the image of the twin towers being hit in this one-minute commercial.

This is exemplary of their desperation. They’re convinced that they have sufficiently stirred up the racist element in the voting block with the border brouhaha and can simply transfer that energy to the Muslims just in time for the election. I know that there is someone out there that would be more eloquent about the ethics of this offensive, truly un-American atrocity, and I look forward to any feedback that may help me comprehend what lies behind it. It is brutally simple. It wont work; the NP predicts that there will be the mother of all backfires.

Americans are decent people; they possess the capacity for empathy when it is cultivated. Our country has had great leadership from people that knew what the common welfare meant. Only in recent times have we fallen from the sensible path, especially with the advent of Fox News and their brand of “journalism.”

Kudos to Obama for putting Tom DeLay back in the limelight; it is nicely placed in the election pre-season. What a great reminder to the public of the institutionalized corruption of the GOP. Tom will, no doubt, appear on Fox to crow about his “exoneration,” when in fact the AG probably figured that prosecuting him was too expensive for the resulting wrist slap from the GOPs Supreme Court. Better to use his notoriety and famous vanity to put the hypocrisy of a once grand old party on display.

The GOP cannot get away with this; nothing will remove the stain that George W Bush was to the GOP brand. Some media company isnt going to revive them by turning their greatest failure into anything other than just thatan Epic Fail.

The News Pauper: The Only Thing Youll Ever Need to Know

By W.B. Dunne

Oh, how the News Pauper regrets being able to think critically! My time would be so much better spent with the masses, speculating aimlessly for hours about how to survive the coming calamities. Should I join a group or enclave of doomers? How much duct tape should I have put aside for my children and grandchildren if the manufacture of such stuff ends suddenly?

In case the reader has missed the sarcasm dripping off the last paragraph, he or she is probably on to the trick and about to ask, “where the hell have you been News Pauper?”

Yes, I have been silent for most of the summer due to an utter inability to join in any discussion that doesnt have to do with the disaster we have made of the Gulf of Mexico!
The only thing that exceeds the depth of the effects of this gargantuan fuck up is the callous way the story has been moved down the page by our crippled press and the collusion of all parties to cover up the true nature of the facts.

I find it fascinating that the reason the press has continued to fail us in such grand style is the unspoken pact between us to ignore the reality that the ocean DYING is going to cause most of us to suffocate when it ceases to produce the oxygen we all breathe. In the story of the planets that exist in the universe, ours would be the impulsive, excessive character that takes down not only himself, but everyone aboard.

In true News Pauper fashion I will opine sans links and trust that the reader inherently accepts my credibility enough to spare me the drudgery of all that cutting and pasting.

The reader perhaps already acknowledges the dire vista we face. We are beyond rescue now, fate has judged us on our actions and we will see our destruction not in a war for resources, starring the haves and the have-notsbut in an egalitarian, slow and horrible suffocation and starvation. We will continue to eat the tainted food and drink the tainted water. We will drown in the rising oceans, which hopefully will be so kind as to not be also burning at the time.

So you see, dear reader, that it matters not a whit what you or I do anymore because we Americans allowed ourselves to be manipulated by these greedy corporate assholes straight away into the Book of Revelations. It is too late for regrets; revenge is pointless. The creatures that succeed us will be too busy scrounging for scraps to wonder where all the detritus came from.

So ends mankinds reign on planet earth.

Never have so few taken so much from so many.
