Shirley Sherrod Confirms She is Suing Breitbart

From the AP, by way of Ben Smith at Politico.com:

Sherrod to Sue Breitbart

July 29, 2010

Ousted Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod said Thursday she will sue a conservative blogger who posted an edited video of her making racially tinged remarks last week.

The edited video posted by Andrew Breitbart led Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to ask Sherrod to resign, a decision he reconsidered after seeing the entire video of her March speech to a local NAACP group. In the full speech, Sherrod spoke of racial reconciliation and lessons she learned after initially hesitating to help a white farmer save his home.

She said she doesn’t want an apology from Breitbart for posting the video that took her comments out of context, but told a crowd at the National Association of Black Journalists annual convention that she would “definitely sue.”

And nuts to that besotted idiot Chris Matthews for asserting today on his ‘Hardball’ show that Fox News had not peddled the toxic Breitbart story before Sherrod resigned from the USDA:

The Tattlesnake — Glenn Beck’s Greased Rail Edition

News Item: Glenn Beck Has Lost 1/3 of His TV Audience Since January

A Shame He’ll Miss Out on the Tar and Feathers

Unlike his semi-serious colleagues O’Reilly and Hannity, Beck was always just a babbling flash in the pan; a sideshow freak-out of raving, nearly incoherent right-wing outrage and contradictory conspiracy theories. He had to keep topping himself in craziness or risk boring his audience with deadly repetition. He’s now run out of ideas and gone with the latter, and his viewers are turning him off, so his only hope for a final ratings coup is to go out like a flaming comet with a total on-air screeching psychotic meltdown and then R&R at some luxurious mental rehab facility. But don’t fret for Beck he’s made many more millions from his strange circus act than most legitimate clowns.

With his ratings dropping, nearly all of his A-line advertisers gone, and his goofy Prof. Irwin Corey and Howard Beal Meet Joe McCarthy routine growing stale, isn’t it high time for Uncle Rupert to show Glenn Beck the door?

“Let’s put Beck’s ratings into context. Yes, in the world of cable news, his numbers are impressive, and virtually any host would be happy to have them. But look how far Glenn Beck has fallen recently. In late January and into February, the program was averaging 3 million viewers each week. And late last year, the show spent month after month flirting with that figure. Today, the viewership is trending around 2 million (Last week it was exactly 2.01 million viewers.) — which means that in a span of just three months, Glenn Beck has lost nearly one-third of its television audience.” []
“Corporate America (aka the beloved free marketplace) wants nothing to do with Beck. Today, there are less than a handful of nationally recognized advertisers who appear willing to purchase air time on Glenn Beck. Think about the deep, deep discounts Fox News likely has to offer the remaining advertisers in order to get them to come aboard. (And the show is supposed to be a hit.) Now add to that equation the fact that Glenn Beck has lost 1/3 of its audience since January, and you can see where this is heading for Fox News.
“How soft are Beck’s current ratings? He’s now posting the type of numbers that his show used to get when he was on vacation and somebody less famous stood in for him, like when he took a few days off in late March and his show averaged 1.9 million viewers. Beck’s been back from his March vacation for weeks now, but his ratings are roughly the same as when he wasn’t even there.”

Prediction: Beck will be off of Fox News before 2011.

The News Pauper: Nailed It!

By W.B. Dunne

And that’s where the fear of the perpetual angry mob comes in, and perhaps why Fox News, rather than lamenting the ugly and cowardly eruptions, seems to be encouraging it, or at least rationalizing it. Perhaps Fox News, the de facto opposition party, wants that threat of mob intimidation on the table, maybe Fox News wants Democrats to be thinking about the political consequences of further upsetting that unhinged mob.

The NP crawls back to the rancho like the proverbial wastrel he is without explanation or excuse for his absence. Contributing to the LT Saloon at times can be like imagining ones self to a tropical island. If it isnt the sheer caliber of writing taking my will to express myself into the alley, it is the scope of the issues to choose from which all are serious enough to consume all of my time and me with it.

Allow an example please:

I chose the quote above to begin this post because I think it is the most present danger we face.

I could have started with any of these other serious issues; the mining company that is in the process of shielding itself and by proxy all corporations from, the responsibility of destroying the lives of the families that were unfortunate enough to work there.

I could expound upon the release of a little movie called Collateral Murder filmed by the crew of an Apache helicopter. I predict a slew (pun) of copycat films to follow.

Imagine if these were released as they happen, instead of having to sit on a shelf for two years, how it would affect the day-to-day ratings and enlighten the masses to the glory of using .50 cal. rounds on unarmed groups in broad daylight. How wonderful for the police state to advertise the results of their long research. (I give up; it is impossible to even summon sarcasm to react to what is contained in this bravely leaked video.)

It would be so easy to bring up the continuing failure of anyone at all holding the past administration to account for war crimes.

I could talk all day about Exxon Fn Mobil Oil Company paying zero taxes in 2009, or that a Chinese vessel is spilling oil onto the Great Barrier Reef or that I feel stressed and manipulated and frankly embarrassed about having zero hope today for the future.

I once thought that it would be enough to see conservatism despoiled for its falseness. I watched as the smarmy fake ’80s made a brand of Christian conservatism, then I watched it morph into the 911 brand of torture-crazed patriotism; now I see Fox News fomenting sedition with impunity and wonder where it will stopI know where it will lead if it doesnt.

It is with humble apologies to my editor and you readers that I submit my latest debacleif I dont become less discouraged, if I cant reset my outrage circuit, I may be done for.

Today’s Quotes: Fired to Support an Arrogant Pig

Rumor is a statistician is about to release an accurate report of Rush Limbaugh’s national radio ratings over the past five years, compiled from the confirmable local ratings of stations around the country. The upshot: Rush is now under a million per week in regular listeners, much less than the 20 million he claims, and he’s been losing ground since 2004. Wonder what this will do to the ad rates on Limbaugh’s shows? Oh, yeah, and Clear Channel, the media corporation that’s paying Limbaugh $400 million dollars over the next eight years, is slowly going under. Who’s going to pay Limbaugh’s contract off if they go bankrupt? Perhaps they’ll ask for a government bailout to buy off Rush with the excuse that he’s too big to fail.

“The astronomical worth of Limbaugh’s eight-year pact: $400 million. The amount of money Clear Channel execs have been trying to scrimp and save this year as they lay off thousands from the struggling company: $400 million. Ironic, don’t you think?”
[]
“Context: Clear Channel now pays Limbaugh more than NBC pays late-night ratings king Jay Leno. Who thinks Limbaugh brings in more ad revenue for Clear Channel than Leno does for NBC? FYI, The Tonight Show generates approximately $200 million annually for NBC.”
— Eric Boehlert, “Limbaugh’s Living Large While Radio Boss Clear Channel Implodes,” Media Matters, May 5, 2009.

“But during all this growth I havent lost any audience. Ive never had financially a down year. Theres supposedly a recession, but weve got — what is this May? Back in February we already had 102% of 2008 overbooked for 2009. So I always believed that if were going to have a recession, just dont participate.”

Friday’s Quote: Unhinged

“It’s astounding to watch the avalanche of hate ooze from conservative media quarters. And why? Because Obama passed an economic recovery bill. Good Lord, imagine if he had failed to win the popular vote and then led the country into a pre-emptive war based on faulty intelligence, a war that lost thousands of American lives, and tens of thousands of foreign lives, while milking the U.S. treasury out of a few trillion dollars in the process.”
— Eric Boehlert, “Unhinged in 30 days: The right-wing media’s Obama era implosion,” Media Matters, Feb. 23, 2009.
