A simple explanation of a war few understand in context of today’s politics…

picture-1859World War I was hyped as the war to end war, but it only planted the seeds for more wars. World War II and the U.S. wars in Iraq have roots in World War I. Democratic President Woodrow Wilson ran for a second term in 1916 with the slogan “He kept us out of war” but by 1917 he vowed to enter the European war to “make the world safe for democracy.”

Democracy was in peril on the streets of America during the Wilson administration. A postwar “Red Scare” round-up of political dissidents in America during the Wilson administration was, wrote historian Frederick Lewis Allen, an unprecedented trampling of the U.S. Constitution.
