O’Neill: Teachers, Saul Alinsky, and the Boogey Man

One of the big boogey men of the always-paranoid right wing of American politics is Saul Alinsky. To hear Republicans tell it, Saul Alinsky was about the worst thing to happen to the human race since phlegm. Alinsky wrote a book called Rules for Radicals, a tome that had mostly been forgotten until right-wing commentators needed another lefty to scare people with, another American Commie intent on subverting everything good and supplanting it with unions, equal rights, and other subversive ideas.

According to anti-union propaganda meisters, the liberals studied Alinsky’s book as though it were the Bible, forcing fellow libs to memorize it word for word and recite it at the secret meetings held weekly to keep brainwashed cadres in synch with the Satanic liberal faith. For right-wingers who never read Alinsky’s book, his Eastern European name and the stuff they were told by Hannity, Limbaugh, and O’Reilly were enough to ensure enough fear to satisfy even the most ravenous right-wing appetite. Without fear, the right shrinks like cheap cotton in a hot dryer.
