Don’t be fooled: C Streeter and wingnut GOP conservative Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma isn’t changing his stripes; he, and the other members of the GOP elite, have noticed that their angry, apocalyptic rhetoric has unleashed a firestorm of bigotry and ugliness in the base, the kind of blind rage that scares away the independent voters the Republicans desperately need to win in 2010 and 2012.
Come on now. She is nice [Nancy Pelosi] how many of you all have met her? Shes a nice person”
Just because somebody disagrees with you dodnt (sic) mean theyre not a good person”
So dont catch yourself being biased by FOX News that somebody is no good. The people in Washington are good. They just dont know what they dont know
— Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Ding-Dong), to an Oklahoma townhall meeting, April 6, 2010, as quoted by the Capitol News Connection. H/t to Bartcop.com.
While I agree, generally, I think it best to at least give a smidge of credit for at least the attempt to be more civil. Best to encourage that rather than provide a no-win situation where all they have to go back to is more crazy than the last crazy. I’m sure it wasn’t sincere, but sometimes being nudged in the right direction can encourage further better rhetoric and behavior. Otherwise the only reward lies in increasing the insanity for the base all too eager to push society off consecutively higher cliffs.
I’d like to give some credit to Coburn, but he is the guy who is cynically holding up unemployment benefits to desperate people out of work and was blocking benefits to injured vets, and apparently it was all for petty political reasons — he hoped Obama and the Dems would be blamed. Anyone that vile is beyond deserving credit for civility. If he quit his office, then I’d be happy to give him all the credit in the world.
