The News Pauper: Now That’s Leadership!

By W.B. Dunne

The News Pauper returns from his travels in the real world.

The “news” is full of the items that perpetuate the status quo of hyperbole over content.

It is the humble NP’s desire to avoid dissipating my meager energies responding to the daily outrage in deference to observing the larger trends that indicate the way the future will be. The following is a commentary that no doubt will go against the grain of the latest strident outcry over Obama’s moves in office.

I support Obama because he is in fact playing a long game that has already begun to bear fruit. Namely, look how we as a public are digesting real information again … even the Foxers can’t escape discussing the reality of the disparity in the wealth people hold in this country while the tax cut debate proceeds.

Fox News and the media at large are cornered into presenting facts, although skewed, in the story about WikiLeaks. The list goes on as you, dear reader, already know. It isn’t my intention to repeat the litany of which you are completely aware.

The cries on the left of betrayal by Obama are good for the discourse in the regard that the right is compelled to gloat publicly, drawing a huge amount of attention to the policies in question. Obama is wise, and far from weak…how else would he be able to commit to such a course?

He knows what is necessary to turn the ship of state.

The energy he is creating on the left by pretending to cater to the right will be a force that shows the tea party for what it is; a shell. The right is forced into an impossible position of supporting the devil himself to get their agenda enacted, and I can point out several examples of this dynamic already happening in the tax cut story.

The News Pauper: So You Say You Won…Fair and Square

By W.B. Dunne

This one goes out to the youngsters out there who have only begun to experience the political process in America. The ones who voted Obama into office and are now seeing the correction for the first time in these midterms:

The Democrats won in a landslide in 2010 for the first time ever in a midterm election, and the fact that there is a “Speaker Boehner” on November third is due to a Supreme Court decision, the Koch Brothers, Fox News, the US Chamber of Commerce, and Karl Rove.

The NP reminds the young voter that the great court supported the corrupted GOP with its Citizens United decision, allowing for unlimited and undisclosed money from corporations and foreign interests in the campaign. The unintended consequence was that it helped the Tea Party candidates too, and that fact threatens to split the right wing in the House of Representatives. A silver lining for Progressives if ever there was one!

Hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign interference has bought the corporate masters precious little. Speaker Boehner will get what he always wanted and was promised long ago, the mantle of Head of the GOP Majority, but it will not be what he thought it would be. He is presiding over a shattered party in disarray, and it couldn’t happen to a more corrupt deserving devil!

The right outspent the left eight to one to garner a measly majority in the House, and despite all the crowing, all that has been accomplished is the creation of a need to follow through with these untenable policies the right pretends to espouse. They say that America has given the Republicans another chance; the reality is that their corporate daddy BOUGHT them another chance.

The News Pauper: On Freedom of Speech in the Year 2010

By W.B. Dunne

As the News Pauper peruses the demise of sensible discourse since the end of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, he is forced to ask himself if the Founding Fathers expected anything like Fox News or Rush Limbaugh to exist. It seems to be common belief that the actions of these right-wing ‘Nattering Nabobs’ and those like them will somehow put the Constitution to a test…those archaic intellects can’t be safe in a world with Mass Media Mensas like Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes to contend with!

It seems to smack of panic-stricken recognition of the threat of irrelevance or defeat that drives the daily shrillness on Fox. Glenn Beck bounces the rhetorical superball down the crazy collider and Rush superconducts the energy generated into the mainstream conversation.

In the beginning, Rush carried the crazy relatively alone, but now, a generation later, the crazy is refracted and amplified. Like shards in the gutter from some smash and grab, there are so many knock-offs of Rush we may never be completely free of them.

The NP begs the reader to consider the environment in which our founding documents were spawned, and consider the possibility that the intent of the First Amendment was the following:

Hyperbole must exhaust itself eventually, so there is much to be gained by allowing that energy to dissipate itself than to waste energy fighting or censoring it. The Founders knew this and made it a priority for their timeless document.

Many see the Citizens United decision in the US Supreme Court as a challenge to the First Amendment’s ability to protect the rights of common citizens in this country, in favor of large corporations spending huge sums to affect the results of elections. The NP sees the wisdom of the Founders peeping through…having the benefit of being true visionaries rather than false Fox Prophets…they realized that it is human nature to react in the moment and to only play these things out to their extremes in retrospect, after the effect of the momentary reaction has taken place and the benefit of the insight is useless.

How lucky we are as a society to be the beneficiaries of such a system, which intentionally stems the knee from jerking when it is struck by something.

The way that this is set up, every dime that is spent attempting to undermine democracy is doomed to be lost by the ones doing the undermining…and absorbed into the democracy itself.

The NP has done his share of complaining about the state of the nation due to the rhetoric in the discourse, but has recently been shown the light by the Founders themselves. I’m convinced that the corner has been turned and the light of democracy will soon shine its warmth again. The desperate crowing of the right is the ‘tell’ for me, it is a degree of hyperbole that demonstrates the final throes, if you will, of an ill-planned and poorly executed attack on democracy by a cabal of evil and their laughable junior minions.

All the money in the world won’t remove the stain of guilt from Dick Cheney and Karl Rove, who brought us George Bush, the first selected President in American History.

Karl Rove is attempting a big comeback with his American Crossroads unit. Funded primarily by those with the most to lose in the restoration of the interests of the general welfare, it will be a pleasure to see them fade into history, under the circular file name “Frauds”.

Once these elements of our society are rendered obsolete, we can begin the task of bringing the greed to heel. I predict that, one day, conspicuous consumption, which is veiled with words like “exclusive” or “upscale,” will give way to conspicuous generosity.

Perhaps it will be the goal of the corporate person itself!

A child will one day say to herself,

“I wish to grow up to be a philanthropic trillionare CEO of Corporation X, so I could be credited with the relief of the suffering of generations of humans by conquering poverty and disease through the eradication of ignorance.”

It is quite enough for the NP to have a few read this and smile.

For now.

The News Pauper thinks that its just weird that the apologists for BP can say such things that simply defy reason. I am especially fond of the specious argument that the dirty fucking hippies forced the industry into deeper, more dangerous water. Such incredible positions make one desire to see what led them there, like when you happen upon a car thrown by calamity through a high billboard. (That pic exists out there Im sure.)

After mulling the dilemma over and over again and running into the dead end that also must arrest the thought process of those that traffic such polluted musings, the NP stumbled upon the answer. Like any criminal caught in the act, the purveyors of this line have to know deep down that their own actions put them there. In their blind support of the policy put forth by the flag-waving hypocrites of the last administration, they laid the trap they find themselves in now.

The twisted logic is a reflex, however — twisting and rending the story doesnt change the reality that greed prevented the drillers from putting systems in place that would insure against this disaster. Like any sociopath, when the inevitable happens, Priority One is to deflect responsibility. Everyone sees this plainly in the acts of the BP executives and the pols and lobbyists trying to pin the spill on Obama.

This event is the game changer that will dismantle the infrastructure of the right-wing in this country and they know it. No infiltrator or skilled provocateur could have exposed the utter contempt for anything outside of profit more clearly than this self-made blunder.

Another interesting thing about these folks is their math skills. BP has low-balled the estimates of the amount of oil spewing from their nightmare well from day one in order to minimize the damages they will undoubtedly incur. In a recent piece I read, an impossibly high figure was attached to the amount of money already put out by BP in the response. The fact that the effect that this crime is having on the human and animal victims in the Gulf States isnt story one on every news outlet is further proof that the media is not doing its job. The fact that BP contractors have attempted to prevent the coverage is another huge tell about what they know and what we dont.

The NP keeps telling the folks he sees in daily life that this is not something that can be ignored, and that this is in no way a remote event happening to someone else “down there.” What companies like BP and others do across the globe is slowly killing us. This particular high profile case will wake us up, and I hope that those that are involved in the actual clean-up of this toxic debacle are well-compensated and observed closely for symptoms of poisoning. If the aftermath of the Exxon Valdes is any indicator though, my hopes are not high. The average age of death of the clean-up crew on that one was 51 years old.

Does no one comprehend the emergency we are in? When will responsible parties take control of this situation? Why are we wasting our time listening to the bloviations of those that caused the mess to begin with? Have we lost the ability to say no and marginalize the toxic element? I do not want the distinction of witnessing the start of Armageddon in the form of the ecological destruction we face. We need to purge these elements that polluted our discourse. We need to hold those responsible for this mess accountable and that means facing the facts that we were fed a line by an industry that didnt invest a cent in the technology to deal with this disaster. We need to face the fact that there were criminals in government that enabled the energy concerns in this malfeasance. We didnt prosecute the torturers and wire-tappers and countless other treasonous offensesand look where it got us. If we cant get justice, we can at least ostracize the guilty instead of giving them platforms in national media to inflict further damage.

Finally, I would like to point to a woman named Kindra Arneson who has a YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkYJDI8pK9Y

Please view and share this.

My interest in this clip began when I was seeking more information about the conditions on the shores in proximity to the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe. Little did I expect such an eloquent representative of the people in the middle of this thing.

Of course, the woman has been subjected to abuse by operatives in the right-wing blogosphere, and I expect her to suffer more if the vid gains ground as it should. She has been called a plant and worse. If her activism continues and she is as credible as she appears in this clip she will count me among her kindred spirits.

The NP is no touchy-feely pushover and would be a better executioner than a gardener; I judge that the message is valid even if delivered through a spys lips. The right often lets the truth be known and discredits the source. (See Dan Rather/George Bush National Guard records, here and here.) [Editor’s Note: And also recall that CBS parent Viacom’s owner, Sumner Redstone, strongly supported Bush in 2004.]

The NP will return with more on the end of the world as it occurs

The News Pauper: This Is It

By W.B. Dunne

The News Pauper humbly regrets his inability to post regularly. It in no way reflects on the dear readerhere is my latest attempt to say something regarding what is certain to become the most devastating disaster done to us by the Bush-Cheney Cabal.

The NP suspects British Petroleum CEO Tony Hayward is making these insane comments in order to divert attention from the fact that BP is not going to let their profits go to save a bunch of fucking turtles. Until they can cap that well and feed it into tankers, theyll let that baby spill. Hell probably get a bonus too, if he can successfully bullshit his way through the crisis and keeps those stock prices up.

I think that the South deserves to be polluted for generations. Their backward thinking and blind support of the robber barons that twisted their trust and faith and patriotism has finally come home to roost. Already there have been anecdotal stories popping up of oil-tinged rain falling in central Florida, there have also been reports of a more reliable nature telling of fisherman engaged by BP in the cleanup becoming ill with nosebleeds and respiratory ailments. How many American lives will be sacrificed to the all-powerful oil company, British Petroleum? Did we lose the Revolutionary War?

If the GOP thinks that the South will sweep them into power again simply because this accident occurred under Barack Obamas watch, they’d better think again. I predict that the presidents cool will carry him through even this horrible event. I think that even the low information reactionary will see through any attempt at steering the blame away from those actually responsible. Even with a mass media that is owned and operated by the energy concerns squelching the stories coming out and priming the memes that do come out, this event has seeped into the conversation in every room in the country. There are suddenly experts in every comment column with vast knowledge of what is being done and many predictions of varying degrees of doom about the outcome. I cant see how an entire summer of increasingly dismal news coming out of the Gulf of Mexico will contribute to the popularity of the ‘Drill Baby Drill’ bunch.

It seems that every time some really bad event takes place anywhere in the world, Dick Cheneys Halliburton is smack in the middle of it. I think this is it for BP, Halliburton, and with their demise will come an era of fierce reprisals and reassessment of the way things are done in the future. If Deadeye Dick lands in St. Helena, like Napoleon, for the rest of his natural life, thatll be icing on the cake for those of us whose peace and tranquility he has stolen forever.
