Democratic Party candidate for president Barack Obama has filed an emergency request today with the Illinois Supreme Court to legally change his name to “Barry Harry Smith.”

“My campaign is about uniting America,” Sen. Obama/Smith told reporters. “If my birth name is a point of divisiveness, I want to change that, hopefully within the next 24 hours.”

Augusto Benito Franco, a spokesman for the state court in Illinois, said this afternoon in a press conference, “Though the request is highly unusual, we will do our best to accommodate Sen. Obama. A three-judge panel should decide by tomorrow morning.”

Obama/Smith’s campaign announced that they will be running television and radio ads all day tomorrow in the Democratic primary states of Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont, alerting voters to the name change, should it be approved. Election officials in those states said it is too late to alter the ballots, but they will provide polling place signs noting the new name.

When notified of Obama/Smith’s desire to change his name, Howard Wolfson, communications director for Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign, said, “Barack Hussein Obama is a fine name and I would wonder why he would change it at this late date. Perhaps, in light of the fact that a Joseph Smith founded the Mormon church, we should question whether the senator has converted to that religion from Islam.”

I have wondered what things would have been like if Saddam’s last name had been Schickelmeyer or Smith. Would the Hillary Camp and the Right-wingnuts be referring to Obama as Barack Hussein Obama?

What if Osama’s first name were Wally? Would the Right Wingnuts be calling him Barack Osama?

I am really getting sick of Hillary’s desparate tactics. This is no longer a race for the presidency, it is all about Hillary.

While I could have supported a Hillary ticket if she wins the nomination, I fear that because of her actions in trying to secure this nomination she will turn off a HUGE segment of Democrats who for the first time in a very long time have become energized for this election. I think that now if she winds up with the nomination, the majority will stay at home thus giving McCain the office by default.

I agree, DJ — Hillary smugly thinks that if she beats Obama using Rove’s playbook that us progressives/liberals/lefties will have no place to go so that we’ll have to vote for her in November. She may be in for a big surprise — many, including myself, have been disgusted by her Bush scare tactics and may think twice before voting for her in the general election. She’ll also lose the youth and most of the independent vote. In a year that should be a walk for the Dems, Hillary will have turned a sure Dem victory into defeat — all to serve her outsized ego.

BTW, do you remember reading in 2003, while we were still the ‘good guys’ in Iraq since we just got rid of Saddam, that hundreds of Iraqis had named their kids after George W. Bush? Should be an interesting future with anti-American insurgents running around the Middle East with names like George W. Bush Muhammad, George W. Bush Ali, George W. Bush Hassan, and — yes — George W. Bush Hussein.
