37 Senate Democrats just told the US Postal Service to disobey Trump. Do not implement his mail-in voting order. It’s unconstitutional. It’s illegal. Refuse it.
On March 31, Trump signed an executive order directing the US Postal Service to stop delivering mail-in ballots to anyone not on a government-approved list. The Postal Service would receive “Mail-in Absentee Participation Lists” created by Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.
The Postal Service would then have the final say over whether your ballot gets delivered to an election official. If you’re not on the list, your ballot goes in the trash.
This is Trump trying to personally control who gets to vote in November.
On Tuesday, 37 Democratic senators led by Chuck Schumer, Gary Peters, Alex Padilla, and Dick Durbin sent a formal letter to the USPS Board of Governors demanding the agency refuse to implement the order.
Their language was unambiguous: “The Constitution provides no role for the President in regulating federal elections. And no statute delegates to the President any authority to regulate elections or voter eligibility either, including via USPS. By issuing the executive order, however, the President is attempting to unconstitutionally consolidate power to personally regulate American elections.”
Then the senators went further: “For over 250 years, the Postal Service has bound our country together with a constitutionally recognized mail service, and for 250 years, the American people have democratically elected their leaders. Any attempt to effectuate this order would violate the Constitution, break these bonds, and threaten the foundations of American democracy.”
This is Democrats telling a federal agency to disobey a sitting president’s executive order. Publicly. In writing. Because they believe the order is illegal.
They have good reason.
More than 20 Democratic-led states have sued to block it. The Democratic National Committee has sued. Voting rights groups have sued. And here is the punchline that nobody can ignore: Trump himself voted by mail last month in a Florida special election. He signed the order, then used the thing he’s trying to ban.
The timeline is simple. Trump lost in 2020 and blamed mail-in voting. He is losing support in 2026. His approval is in the mid-30s.
Republicans just lost Virginia by a landslide. Thirty-eight GOP House members are retiring. And the man who said Republicans would “never lose a race for 50 years” if mail voting was banned just tried to ban it.
This is what it looks like when a president tries to steal an election in advance. And 37 senators just drew the line.
